Tendertips is a household name; supplying New Zealand supermarkets with fresh asparagus for 38 years. Geoff Lewis and his wife Liz started Tendertips back in 1980. Geoff’s son Cam and wife Catherine together jointly own Tendertips, and have recently diversified into strawberry growing in polytunnels under their new brand – Lewis Farms.
We have a number of blocks growing several varieties of asparagus, located within 20 km of the Packhouse in the Himitangi, Foxton and Poroutawhao areas. The geographical spread of crops provides some protection against isolated climatic events. We grow a number of varieties of asparagus including purple asparagus.
We employ teams of harvesters to pick our asparagus daily during the season (Sept-Dec). Key requirements for the harvesting rols include the ability to start work in the early morning and work up to 7 days a week. You must be physically fit without back problems (harvesting requires a lot of bending) and be able to work outside for up to six hours regardless of weather conditions.
We employ a packhouse team to grade and pack our asparagus. This work requires standing for long periods of time and can be fairly repetitive so we aim to rotate people through different tasks during the day. We commence the season with part-days and rapidly move to a full seven-day per week operation. We like our team members to work 5-6 days per week, including one weekend day. Normal hours are 7.30am – 5pm.
We have a small on-site campground for caravans and motorhomes.
Please note that we conduct pre-employment drug-testing.

The asparagus season is typically 100 days, from mid September till Christmas. Occasionally we have a small amount of asparagus that we sell January-March.
During the season Tendertips Asparagus is available throughout the country, we dispatch fresh crop daily. We also sell our asparagus at our Packhouse shop – where customers can buy the freshest asparagus possible. Check out our Facebook page for up to date opening hours.
Yes, we export to Japan. We have long term established relationships with several customers in Japan. Our Japanese customers enjoy the sweet flavour profile of our asparagus as well as the fresh quality. We have received feedback that our asparagus is the sweetest in the world- we put this down to the temperate growing climate of the Horowhenua!
No, we do not. We grow a number of different green varieties as well as purple, all available from our Packhouse Shop.
